Blue Ridge Mile

The Blue Ridge Mile Clinic

The Blue Ridge Mile Clinic is a student organization at Washington and Lee University, helping individuals in Rockbridge County and the surrounding area navigate the complex process of obtaining or reinstating their driver’s licenses. The organization supports community members facing systemic and personal challenges related to the legal and administrative steps needed to secure a driver’s license.

In the organization, I play a key role in advocating for the Spanish-speaking community. As the Language Specialist, I was the main point of contact for Spanish-speaking clients, guiding them through the necessary steps and ensuring they understood the entire process. In addition to providing language support, I coordinated and taught a Spanish Driver Education course, helping community members through the Virginia driver’s license process. These roles allowed me to support in directly individuals facing language barriers and advocate for greater access to services within our community.

Legislation

In collaboration with Drive-to-Work and Delegate Betsy B. Carr, license suspension reform was passed in the Virginia General Assembly. HB 1080 prohibits license suspension from extending beyond ten years from the date of conviction. HB 1082 allows the court to authorize a restricted license to a judgment debtor who has failed to pay certain judgments.
