Los Pueblos Unidos
Los Pueblos Unidos de la Región Cholulteca y de los Volcanes
During my study abroad program in Oaxaca, I had the opportunity to collaborate with Los Pueblos Unidos de le Región Cholulteca y de los Volcanes – a community in Puebla, Mexico, known for their resistance against government exploitation and preservation of their resources. I worked with a group of students to engage with the community members and learn about their ongoing efforts to fight environmental and social injustices, particularly the exploitation of local water resources by the transnational company Bonafont and the harmful effects of an unsanitary landfill near the community.
As part of our visit with the community, we worked on producing a podcast that highlighted powerful stories of resistance, resilience, and hope with a broader audience. In my role as Podcast Editor, I was responsible for multiple post-production tasks, including creating a podcast cover, audio cleanup and editing, and segmenting content for the podcast. The final 20-minute episode focused on the community’s struggles and achievements while amplifying their efforts to other resistance groups worldwide.
To prevent engaging in academic extractivism, the finished product was handed over to Los Pueblos Unidos de la Región Cholulteca y de los Volcanes. The podcast was intended as a resource for the community and a gift of gratitude for opening their doors and sharing their stories with us. While the entire episode cannot be shared publicly at the moment, once it is made available, direct sources will be attached to share the inspiring stories that touched us.
