U.S. House of Representatives
Congressman Adriano Espaillat
This past summer I spent my time in Washington, D.C. interning for Congressman Adriano Espaillat. Congressman Espaillat is the first formerly undocumented Dominican in Congress, representing New York’s 13th district, the smallest and most densely populated congressional district. Key priorities for the Congressman during the summer included the Holcomb Rucker Park Act, the Americas Act, and securing funding for the Second Avenue Subway in East Harlem.
In this role, I gained valuable insights into the legislative process and the workings of government. I assisted in research and policy analysis, helping to draft reports and prepare materials for congressional briefings. This experience honed my skills in effective communication and reinforced my commitment to public service as I engaged with constituents and learned the importance of representation and advocacy in shaping policies that impact our communities.

Legislative
In my role as an intern, I worked on various projects related to policy advocacy and legislative research. I assisted the office by conducting research on ongoing bills, tracking legislative activity, and analyzing how proposed policies would impact the constituents of New York’s 13th District. This gave me a deeper understanding of the legislative process and the importance of research in shaping policy decisions. I was also involved in preparing materials for the office, such as briefing notes and summaries of bills, to support Congressman Espaillat’s advocacy efforts in Congress. This experience gave me first-hand experience in effective advocacy and clear communication of complex policies to decision-makers.
Communications
As part of the communications team, I worked on various digital platforms to help disseminate the Congressman’s message and engage with the public. I was responsible for creating social media graphics, drafting press releases, and assisting with content for the office’s website and social media channels. One of my key takeaways from this role was the realization of how communications plays a crucial role in public policy—not only in spreading information but in shaping how constituents engage with policy.
