W&L Washington Term
Course Overview
During the Spring Term, I had the opportunity to participate in the Washington Term course, an immersive program taught by Professor Brian Alexander that connects academic learning with real-world political experiences. This competitive six-week program, offered by Washington and Lee University, selects only 16 students each year from diverse backgrounds and various majors, allowing them to live in Washington, D.C. while working in political and policy-related settings. The program is designed to offer a unique and enriching experience, providing students with hands-on learning in the heart of the nation’s capital.
Throughout the program, I participated in seminars focused on political advocacy, public policy, and the legislative process while also engaging with guest lecturers from various fields. The course also combines rigorous academic coursework with a hands-on internship experience, offering a comprehensive view of public policy and political engagement. As part of the program, I interned with Congressman Adriano Espaillat, contributing to legislative research, policy analysis, and constituent engagement. Additionally, the course provided ample networking opportunities with political leaders, policymakers, and professionals, helping to expand my understanding of the political landscape and connect with key figures in the field.
